STATEMENT of the National Ulama Conference on the Cotabato bombing

The National Ulama Conference of the Philippines (NUCP) condemns in the strongest terms possible the bombing incident in front of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cotabato City in the morning of July 4, 2009 where five innocent victims were killed and scores of other casualties were wounded.

Islam is a religion of Peace and condemns unjustified use of violence even in the name of religion. Allah Almighty describes in the Glorious Qur’an that anyone who kills unjustly kills the whole of humanity. And anyone who saves a life is as if he saves humanity. (Surah al-Ma’idah
5:32)

The NUCP appeals to our people to resist and oppose any form of crimes against innocent civilians of whatever tribe or religious persuasion. We appeal to the authorities to exert all possible legal means to let the truth prevail and apprehend the culprits behind this dastardly and heinous crime. Indeed, the truth shall set us free! We pray for sobriety and calmness in the midst of trials and tribulation that we all face in Mindanao. We pray for peace and harmony between our people of different cultures, traditions and religions in the name of the One and

Almighty Allah, the Lord of Peace and Compassion.
