The people of Cotabato City are saddened by the bomb explosion which happened last Sunday, July 5, 2009 around 8:30 a.m. in front of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. The explosion caused death, hurt and trauma to innocent civilians, most of them children and students. NOTRE DAME UNIVERSITY CONDEMNS this terroristic act.

We join the families and loved ones of those who died and who were hurt in their call for peace and justice.

We demand:

• All authorities to secure and protect the people and ensure peace and order in the City.

• The City LGU to exert all efforts to intensify security measures by consistently maintaining high police visibility, for the welfare of the people of Cotabato City.

• All media organizations to fully exercise their mandate to properly disseminate information to the public and bring out the truth.

• All people to support the efforts of authorities through increased vigilance and responsible reporting of suspicious behavior of individuals or groups.
We call on all God-fearing people of Cotabato City to maintain sobriety and rationality, to persevere for peace, intercultural understanding, and cooperation, to continuously work for harmony despite fear and grief, and to remain steadfast in our faiths.

Finally, we implore God’s grace to give us courage and strength in the midst of our fearful experience and to continuously guide us to act according to His Holy Will.
